Karen Gustafson
nutrition, public health, ancient herbals, botany, human anatomy, microscopy, drawing,
painting, fiber art
Karen is engaged with the intersection of art and science to research, reveal, and inform. Her recent Raw to Processed series considers food and its relationship to our health. Each diptych investigates the relationship between the elements of raw food to its processed counterpart, as seen under a scanning electron microscope, to explore what our food has become. Her current series focuses on botanical illustrations from the Vienna Dioscurides, an early 6th century illuminated manuscript of De Materia Medica by Dioscurides. These free motion embroidered drawings will be installed along with anatomical works to envision the medicinal role of plants. Karen would like to collaborate with individuals who study food and/or plants and their correlation to human health.

Paula Overbay
microscopic, macroscopic, environment, meteorology, painting, cosmology
Concentrating on the influence of science, Paula's most recent residency at the Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest IL gave her time to develop the Constellation Series. Scheduled shows coming up are “The Manufacture of Clouds” at NYU, “ Atmospheric Disturbances” at Muriel Guepin Gallery, NYC, and “Evaporation, Precipitation” at Saratoga Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY. Paula hopes to connect with scientists that can tell her more about the workings of clouds, the formation of energies in storms, how cycles of rain work.

Steven Sangapore
experience, perception, archetypes, consciousness, cosmos, biological processes
Steve's art is a marriage between scientific and biological themes and archetypes as well as the fusion of his curiosity in the context of nature. His spiritually-dense work illustrates and perpetuates the question of our most profound question: What is the nature of experience? Each of his canvases bears a tangible yet transcendental capturing of profound events of focus using illustratively-styled imagery of micro and macroscopic spaces. His work invokes a sense of juxtaposed materialness governed by conscious and spiritual unity through shape, depth and arrangement. Steve is looking for other science-inspired artists as well as scientists in the fields of cosmology, astronomy and biology to engage and create relationships with.

Donna Hamil Talman
earth science, environmental science, geology, microscopic/macroscopic imagery, painting, photography
Donna's artwork has been featured in numerous publications, collections and galleries across the United States. An accomplished experimenter in visualization techniques and concepts, she is currentyly interested in what can be seen at a microscopic level when all varieties of trash, including plastics, are sloshed around in the ocean for months and years. Donna hopes to connect with others that are interested in and/or work with microscopic imaging.

Margaret Inga Urías is a New York-based interdisciplinary artist primarily using drawing to create large-scale murals, site-specific installations, engraved sculptures, constructed photographs and works on paper. Margaret is the recipient of the Chenven Foundation Grant (2014), the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2013), and the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in Drawing/Printmaking/Book Arts (2011). Her work has been in several solo exhibitions including Equity Gallery in New York City (2017). She is looking to work with scientists involved with astronomy or geology. She is interested in areas of study that include astronomical visualization, especially planetary geology, cosmology, evolutionary mapping, cosmological timelines, celestial object charting, and the history of the universe. She would like to explore new visual techniques to further her work that deals with the origins, evolution and fate of the universe by creating existence maps and astronomical atlases.

Anna Socha VanMatre
being human, mortality, landscapes, humanity, mixed media, painting, drawing, nature,
Anna is a visual artist who works with paint and mixed media to depict scenes of nature that explore relationships between human and non-human; fragility and power. She uses powerful methods such as cutting, tearing, and doubling the surfaces, to envelop the audience and bring them directly inside the scene – an enactment of life with its conflict between fury and serenity, permanence and transience.

Rachael Wren
painting, geometry, environmental elements, symmetry, biological structures, climate change
Rachael received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA from the University of Washington. She is a painter interested in the overlap between art and science. Her paintings navigate the territory between the geometric and the organic, using a grid to structure ephemeral sensations of light and air. These themes have led her to investigate concepts such as patterns in nature, symmetry, fundamental structures that underlie life, and climate change. Rachael is interested in collaborating with scientists whose work involves any of these issues.
